April goes boom!

Last month for GBBD I had practically no blooms outside; this month it's an explosion. Mid-April seems to represent the largest regional variation; I've been seeing photos from my mom in NH of the still-melting snow. Here in Maryland we are about ready to mow the lawn, and the crocuses are done. Redbud and dogwood are just breaking; I haven't seen any tulips yet, and my Mohawk viburnum isn't blooming. But the rest of the spring flowers are going nuts.

Very early daffodils are done, and late ones haven't opened yet, but most of mine are mid-season. The last-pictured ones I'm going to have to try moving when we have a new deck built starting in the next couple of weeks. If I chop them off above the bulb in my usual fashion, oh well.

And sorry about the Vinca minor, but I like it; I know it's a thug. And ha, the bleeding heart arising from the Virginia bluebells. Bleeding hearts are thugs in my yard too.

  1. Glorious! All the snow is gone here except on the north side of the garage, where it always lingers in the shade. It's sunny and breezy here, and we've had some lovely days in the past week. Maples are blooming. My salad table rotted, so I am hoping Ben will build me a new one in the next couple of weeks. And we are having the living room painted next week, which as you know is a bit of a project with the half/cathedral ceiling. Feels like spring, after a very long cold snowy winter.

    1. Hooray, glad it's finally spring! Although the tree pollen is the down side.

  2. Your blooms are simply beautiful. Everything looks so delicate! And the colors are so bright, even the whites. Love those Daffodils!

  3. Such wonderful spring flowers. What amazes me is that you seem to go from snow to lawn mowing almost overnight, with no dull damp days in between. Here's to a warm, sunny spring!

    1. It was a whole month! But it's true that once the snow melted things got moving fast. We've had rainy days, but not a lot of "mud time."

  4. Hi Erica, thanks for visiting my GBBD post. Your plants are colorful too, and i love the grape hyacinth. What is the Vinca minor? is that the purplish one at the middle? So you really like purple too, also my color but difficult to come by at the tropics.

    1. It's the purple five-petaled flower, yes. Ground cover that spreads like crazy, and can be invasive if it gets into wild areas. But it's useful and very pretty at this time of year. And yes, one of my favorite colors!

  5. Such lovely thugs. I wish bleeding hearts were more thugish in mine. I've spent a fortune on them over the years only to have them no return in the spring. Enjoyed you site and will visit again.
