A flower in December

Fair Amaryllis, wilt thou never peep/From forth the cave, and call me, and be mine?

Or, you know, peep forth somewhat earlier than expected. I guess this one was pre-chilled when I bought it, because I stuck it in the library to stay cool, and it sent up a flower stalk within days, and now look at it. The other two have just come out of their dark cave, and hopefully will break dormancy soon and bloom in January or February, but hey, I have a Christmas amaryllis, so I'm thrilled.

Everything outside is frozen. We haven't emptied out the deck railing boxes yet; we'd better get to that.

  1. Wow. May I hire you to grow amaryllis for me? I could write a blog about my failures. I love your labels, by the way. I must find out immediately how to please Thomas Jefferson's Ghost. Visiting from GBBD, RamblinwithAM.

    1. Amaryllis seems to be the one houseplant I can grow successfully (well, we'll see about the lime tree) so I'm thinking of making it a specialty. And PTJG is my label for record-keeping, which I do with reliable inconsistency.

  2. And it's a lovely one. Do you know which it is?

    1. Yes, I probably should have looked for that information before writing this. :) It's called Exotic Star.

  3. Hi Erica, aside from hoya I am also trying to collect amaryllis, however they are notcommon here and very expensive for us online. Good for you they are available in temperate countries just before Christmas. ..AND thanks for visiting my site, yes we probably call them short day plants because we are asleep at night, we consider ourselves not the plants we are calling, hehe.

    1. Amaryllis are in all the bulb catalogs here and not too expensive if you buy them at the same time as your other bulbs to consolidate shipping - which I actually managed to do this year! Good luck with your collection.

  4. At least you have one bloom, and what a beautiful one. I didn't get around to growing any amaryllis this year. But now I wish I had.
